ORIOLE EXPRESS
New Orleans is known, among other things as 'piano town', with a fine tradition of piano players within a band situation accompanied by other great musicians, ie, Hughie piano Smith, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jonnie Johnson [of Chuck Berry Fame] to name a few. In the late 60's,the 'Orioles' with Mickey Jupp on piano and singing and Mo Witham on guitar primarily creating the melodies, managed to inadvertently emulate the music of that great Louisianna town, in a little corner of Essex UK. Other bands tried to re-create this music, but no-one could, locally or nationally Sadly, the 'Orioles' eventually disbanded, but Mick and Mo went on to greater things. Mick with his songs, and Mo with his great guitar work.
For a long time, John Potter has nurtured the idea of recording an album, and possibly a band, in this style, a true mixture of Rock'n'Roll, Country and flashes of blues and cajun. Hence the ORIOLE EXPRESS.
The players on this album -----
Drums
Bill Legend [aka Fyfield] --- started out in Mickey Jupps 'Legend' band, then went on to be the T-Rex drummer.
Pedal Steel guitar
Vic Collins --- from the Kursaal Flyers, who's stunning playing playing makes him one of the top UK steelers.
Guitar
Gypie Mayo --- achieved fame with Dr Feelgood and played on the definative version of Juppy's 'Down at the Doctors'. Then a long stint touring with the Yardbirds, following in the footsteps of Clapton and Beck.
Guitar/ Dobro
Mo Witham --- an original Oriole and Legend player, went on to be a top session player, and Susie Quatro's Guitarist.
Guitar
Dennis Masterton --- from Alvin Jones Band, plays on many tracks.
Bass
John Bobin --- an original Oriole, a very good bass player.
Piano/keyboards/vocals/production
John Potter.
TRACK LISTING
Bark Staving Ronkers by John Bobin
The Southend music scene in the sixties was incredible. Everywhere you went there was live music. In every bar, club
and pub young musicians were given the chance to perfect their craft and to pay their dues before recording and touring further afield. The live music and the records of the time had exuberance, spontaneity and a spark that is sadly missing in the music of today. This book seeks to describe a relatively short period of 12 years or so when John Bobin was involved in some of his early bands. Click on the image to purchase the book:

NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2005 Hi There Folks, Thanks for coming to visit me,I hope you enjoy what's here. The navigation has been made as easy as possible, thanks to Sarah at Artangle. So read on and have a good listen, the louder the better. Well it's been quite a few years now since I first heard the two tracks that shaped most of my music.'Great Balls of Fire' and 'Green Onions'.Two very different styles, but both electrifying. [excuse the pun]. When you push the boundries, and you feel you are succeeding, those original roots are still there waiting in the wings, you start to play, and you think"MMMMM", this music is still as great as it ever was. So I suppose one side of me is looking for new directions, the other side is still the rockin' piano player that I've always been.Having said that,it's been suggested to me that 'Rockin the 88s' be re-released. So now I have secured the rights from Ace Records to re-release it on my website. The great axeman Gypie Mayo contributed on this record,as did Mike M.Take a listen to the two tracks on the samples page. The future-who knows, but coming together as I write is a new album'Oriole Express',named after Juppy's original band [The Orioles], which blew everyone away in the sixties. The Witham/Jupp magic reigned supreme. A bit like Berry and Lewis in the same band. What the tracks are, and who's playing on 'Oriole Express' will be announced soon. Anyway Folks, Thanks for listening to my mad rantings about where I'm at. Please feel free to email me about anything at all, feedback is always very welcome, and I'll come back to you soon, I promise. Regards John.
